The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

"That which we manifest is before us; we are the creators of our own destiny. Be it through intention or ignorance, our successes and our failures have been brought on by none other than ourselves" - The Art of Racing in the Rain
I have never heard of Garth Stein and neither did I hear about this title until Anu suggested it as a read for our bookclub. When I heard the name, I thought oh oh, are we going to read a book on 'racing'?? hehe
Well, yeah the book does tell us a bit about racing, but no its not about racing. It is about a family of three with a dog named 'Enzo'. Denny (struggling race-car driver), Eve (his wife who falls terminally ill) and their daughter Zoe makes the family of three. The amazing thing about the art of racing,,, is that the story is not narrated by a human being. Then by who?? By Enzo, yes by a dog :)
I am not a 'dog' person. Infact I had a very scary experience with two stray dogs. Needless to say, I am very very scared of dogs :D. However, after reading the book, I wished (atleast for a moment) that I had a dog too. If dogs are as faithful and as reliable as Enzo, then why not.
In the book, Enzo says even though he is a dog, his mind is that of a human. He even wants to be reborn as a man in his next life! The story is about how the family falls apart when one of them dies and how Eve's parents - who are called The Twins by Enzo - makes it even harder trying to be the 'best grandparents' (if you know what I mean).
Its a very uplifting story with equal dose of comedy, romance, sadness and happiness. There are moments where you just couldn't stop laughing (when Enzo poops on the twins' expensive carpet or when he pees on the legal documents ) and there are moments where you just couldn't stop crying (when Eve wanted Denny to leave but Enzo to stay on her first day back at home). I wonder what the story would have been like if it was narrated by Denny or Eve instead of Enzo.
This is the October read for our bookclub and am eagerly waiting to find out what other members felt about the book. I am sure all of us would love it, and am sure you would love it too!

  1. My book club all loved the book but we found that it wasn't our best "discussion" book. I loved Enzo and this book definitely touched my heart.
