Here are some food photos from my archives, along with links to recipes. Most of these photos were taken this summer and the related blog posts were updated with new photos.

Rose Saffron Baked Doughnuts | Recipe by Beela Bakes | A lovely discovery this Ramadan

Pistachio Rosewater Cream Cake | Recipe by Dima Sharif | I've baked this cake so many times and it also won me first prize at a cake competition held recently. More on the cake, on my blog here.

Lamb Biryani | Recipe by Sanjeev Kapoor. A biryani I've been making every Eid Al Adha for the past few years.

What started out as a 'let me get few things done before 2015' project has been a humbling and learning experience to say the least. I've checked off six items off the list which means I am almost half way there.

Any and every project takes patience and perseverance. When I drove down to Jumeirah beach the first time, I missed the sunset by few minutes. I felt deflated and  thought, 'hey I tried'. After a week, I decided to give it one more try and this time I left about twenty minutes early. I caught the sunset on camera.

Not everything is easy to do. Have you noticed how internet makes us feel pretty much everything is easy to learn or do? You watch a YouTube video or read a tutorial and think, I could do that, that looks easy. But guess what, most of the time it's not easy. And that's OKAY. That makes the process even more fun and worthwhile.

My list may look like a haphazard pile of activities at first, but the truth is, they were inspired by different moments of motivation and inspirations I've had in the past few months. For our wedding anniversary this year, J got me a macro lens and though I took few photos right after, I didn't put it to good use. Whenever I see raw food photography on Instagram, I tell myself I need to give that a try. I am embarrassed to admit this - I thought it was going to be easy.

Have you noticed how easily we get offended these days? A friend posts a photo or a status update about something we don’t agree with, we get upset easily. Someone forgets the punctuation we see grammar police come up with yet another ‘your grammar is poor’ meme at lightning speed. A home cook announces that she is baking xyz when in fact its called abc, other home cooks tweet, its ABC not XYZ! Man, we put a lot of pressure on others to be perfect. All the time.

I feel, and this is my personal opinion of course, by putting pressure on our peers to be perfect at everything, we are indirectly putting pressure on ourselves to be perfect. We cannot judge others on something unless we are good at it as well, right? I wonder why we are becoming less and less tolerant of beginners, of people who are still learning or simple human errors. What has made us all such an expert at everything?

Joojeh Kebabs (Adapted from Ariana Bundy's cookbook 'Pomegranates and Roses')

Moving on to the recipe, Joojeh Kebab is a staple lunchbox and party dish. I've cooked this dish so many times and I am surprised it took me so long to share the recipe here.

Why is it our favorite? For one, it's very simple and easy to put together. Two, it's healthy and wholesome. Three, it's colorful and pleasing to the eyes. Four, it comes on a stick which for some reason is a sure fire way to get children to eat them. Five, and the most important, the marinade leaves the chicken cubes juicy and succulent. The aroma and flavors of grated onions, yogurt and saffron work well together and leave you asking for more.

I found that seasoning the vegetables and leaving them aside for a while before threading them on skewers brought out their flavors and took the dish to a different level altogether.

What you will need:
About 500 grams boneless chicken cubes
1 medium sized onion grated
1 cup of yoghurt
A pinch of saffron threads
A generous pinch of ground turmeric (optional)
Juice of half a lemon
Ground black pepper, salt and olive oil – go with your instinct and use how much you feel necessary
About 50 grams ghee (optional)
---
Couple of peppers, use different colours
Couple of marrows or few cherry tomatoes (or any other suitable vegetable)
Ground black pepper, salt and olive oil – go with your instinct and use how much you feel necessary
Juice of half a lemon

The past few weekends have been a blur. Hectic and tiring, yet extremely fulfilling. Last night, I spend a good hour with Talha and Aisha in bed trying to put them and myself to sleep. Instead, we ended up watching some hilarious animations, talking to each other, laughing and making really weird noises. As I said earlier, extremely fulfilling.

In sha Allah, within a week or ten days, new stock will arrive at Pretty Paper Studio and the days later would be once again a mad flurry of activities. I enjoy those days and I feel blessed to see my customers happy. That said, new stock arrival means I will be in the studio pretty much every day all day for two to three weeks after and I will end up with fewer hours to work on my #15before2015 list.

The next few days, I plan to work furiously to strike off as many items as possible from the list. And guess what? I’ve struck one off and couple of others are on the verge of finishing! Hooray!

Last Sunday, before going to bed, I asked J whether we could go have breakfast from Tom and Serg. I was telling him where it was and we got distracted by something else. Then the next day, J calls me from work and asks, 'let’s go to that place you mentioned last night?' Don’t you love it when your husband does that?

We had just couple of hours before Aisha would be home from school. I was worried whether we would be late, but then a quick look at the calendar reminded me that I had to get this done soon. Within thirty minutes, we were driving down to Tom and Serg.

I want to say this out loud - I LOVE this project called Week in the Life. I am thankful for bloggers like Ali who comes up with creative ideas like these to document our lives. I love how photos and words can create magic!

I am on the fourth day now and have been enjoying photographing, writing notes and journaling. Here are few photos from the first day and excerpts from my journal:

There was an old building in front our apartment, 30 plus years old, which looked haunted after being left unused. In the past few weeks bulldozers have been busy demolishing it. The noise and dust made me feel miserable. But boy, was I happy to see the empty space. So much light and sunshine in our living room now.

Aisha and I sang 'Adee'i Adee'i' (Arabic version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) a few times before she fell asleep. I don't know who is more excited to learn a nursrey rhyme in a new language, me or her.

I've chosen to start with one of the easiest things to do from my 15 Before 2015 list - get all vacation photos printed. I am still on my first album and have quite a few to go through before I can strike that off the list. I'am also trying to figure out a way to get them printed as the studio right next to our apartment has shut down.

I love going through archives, trying to remember the story behind each photo. Sometimes they are easy and brings a quick smile or giggle. Sometimes, you just stare and try. Like this photo above, I absolutely love it! But I am unable to remember why I captured the 'Foto Ottica' which is basically a photography studio. Maybe I was excited to finally pull out our new DSLR (this was our first trip with a digital camera), or maybe I was trying to tell myself that photography studios were still around in Europe, or maybe I was trying to be artistic. Okay, I am going with the third one just to give myself an ego boost.

Then comes the above photo I took from Vatican Museum. Another one I don't remember much about except that I really like it.

I think I have lost it. The passion to blog. No really, I mean it. I’ve been feeling it for a year now. Starting new series like 'Currently with a twist' and 'Let's Get Crafty' were my poor attempts at reinventing and restarting with new vigour. It worked, for a short while. And then the tiny candle of passion died. Poof!

It’s difficult to set your mind on anything if you aren’t passionate about it. I love writing. I love reading other blogs as well. But there is the never ending tunnel of self doubt. Who reads my blog? Come on, who has the time for blogs now. Instagram is killing blogs, so it seems.

Now that both my children are at school, I thought I would be reading, crafting and photographing like no one’s business. Ding ding ding. Nothing is happening. No mojo whatsoever. So, after listening to way too many podcasts than required and being really inspired by Elise Blaha’s speech at World Domination Summit, I decided to just start. I know I’am good at starting, so I am going to start and hopefully finish this list of 15 projects by December 31, 2014, Insha Allah. I've two months.

I am calling the list ‘15 before 2015’. Basically, these are 15 things that I've been wanting to do for a while. I would keep putting off away thinking I will work on them when Aisha starts school and I've few hours to myself. No more procrastinating.

15 before 2015
1. Photograph sunrise or sunset at Jumeirah beach
2. Go on a breakfast date with J at Tom and Serg
3. Photograph raw ingredients
4. Shoot a process video
5. Sew a simple pillowcase dress
6. Craft something using my Silhouette Cameo
7. Get all my vacation photos printed and make a photobook of our photoshoot pictures
8. Decoupage something. Anything!
9. Organize all my digital photos and upload them on Picasa/Dropbox

Free printable from Imaginary Art
What a week it has been! I do not know where to start or what to write about.

I felt silly posting photos of little things in my life and hashtagging it with #gratefulfor when I should be grateful for everything - the air I breathe, the clean water I drink, the food I cook and eat, a loving husband, two healthy happy children with no worries and so many other things. I simply couldn't continue with the project.

I felt (still feel) bogged down with all the images of Gaza and Malaysian plane crash. To add to the misery, there is the six year old girl from Bangalore. What are we mothers to do?!

The only thing that keeps me going is the expectation of meeting J's brother and family in few days. They are flying in to spend last of Ramadan and Eid with us and we are beyond excited to have them.

Ramadan Goals Update:

Finish recitation of the Holy Quran with translation at least once - Done, Alhamdulillah.

Learn a short chapter (or few verses of a long chapter) from the Holy Quran - finished memorizing the second part of Surah Al Rahman (Chapter 55). Alhamdulillah.

Say Tahajjud prayers at least ten times - Done, Alhamdulillah.

Learn three new prayers (duas) - learnt two, one more to go, Alhamdulillah.

Read an Islamic book with our children - We read couple of books together last week, Alhamdulillah.

Remember the party favor bags I had made for Aisha's birthday? Yes, eons ago. When Huma invited me to be a part of her blog Gheza-e-Shirin's Ramadan event, I decided to stop procrastinating, sit down and write a step by step tutorial.

The full post can be viewed here. Hope you like it!

First week of this Ramadan is coming to an end. We have settled in well and things are, kind of, running smoothly. Alhamdulillah.

I must admit that I do miss the journaling/photography prompts from previous years. Having a list did make things easier. That said, I think, I've been a bit more creative at documenting this Ramadan by taking photos of different aspects of our lives rather than our meals, and the #gratefulfor has turned out to be a quick outlet for my writing.

Ramadan Goals Update:
Finish recitation of the Holy Quran with translation at least once - working on it.

Learn a short chapter (or few verses of a long chapter) from the Holy Quran - I had memorized first part of Surah Al Rahman (55:1-45) sometime in March / April and wanted to finish the rest this month. Alhamdulillah, I've reached verse 69 so far.

Hope you have had a good start to Ramadan. Alhamdulillah, ours has been good so far. The first day was exceptionally good with me thinking where did those fifteen hours go! But then on the second day, I kept counting remaining hours like a child. I think I felt energized during the first day because of the amount of water I had during Suhoor. Keeping ourselves hydrated makes a huge difference when fasting for long hours.

One of my goals for this Ramadan was to tell a non-Muslim friend about Ramadan. I've been pondering over it and realized that I've Muslims and non-Muslims reading this little blog of mine and what better way to introduce someone to Ramadan!

Ramadan, as you might already know, is one of the twelve months of Islamic Calendar. Among others, following are four reasons why we Muslims consider it to be a blessed month:

a) The revelation of the Holy Qur'an started during the month of Ramadan
b) Fasting, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam is observed during the month of Ramadan
c) During the month of Ramadan, door of Divine blessings is open to all those who pray and supplicate
d) The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) would strive harder when it came to prayers during this month and urged his followers to do the same.

One might think, especially seeing the lofty Iftar buffets in this part of the world, that Ramadan is only about keeping ourselves away from food, drink and physical desires. Yes, during Ramadan, we Muslims abstain from food and basic physical appetites from dawn to dusk. However, Ramadan is much more than that.

Source
The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you is fasting, he should abstain from indecent acts and unnecessary talk, and if someone begins an obscene conversation or tries to pick an argument, he should simply tell him, ‘I am fasting. I am fasting’." (Bukhari and Muslim)

This is the month when we strive to connect with our Creator and try to do better spiritually. We train ourselves to curb our intense natural inclinations and strengthen our spiritual self. For a month, we fight various evil inclinations which gives us the power to do the same for next eleven months. We come back to Ramadan again, the cycle continues and our lives become a never ending process of spiritual enrichment.

Ramadan is also the month when Muslims, despite of all the differences among themselves, unite and connect with each other. The communal feeling is much more obvious with everyone coming together for prayers and charity work - which is in fact a part of worship.

I hope I have been able to give you a brief introduction to Ramadan. If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them in the best way possible. In sha Allah.

Every month, I ask a friend to share her Currently list along with me. I am happy to present Sayana Rahiman from My Mouth is Full for the month of June. We met via a book club eons ago and after a couple years' break, we found each other as members of a food blogging community. I love her food photography and writing styles and suggest you check her blog.

Now to our lists, here's Sayanas:

Working on : A healthy lifestyle. I’ve tipped a quarter century in terms of age and I feel it is time to clean up my habits in terms of eating healthy and exercising regularly. I feel motivated by the fact that I’m responsible for my little one and the earlier he can pick up on this, the easier it will be for him as he grows up.

Reading: I haven’t read anything but mindless fiction in a while. This is probably why I’m engrossed completely in my current read Honeymoon in Purdah - An Iranian Journey by Alison Wearing. She paints a beautiful landscape of the country with its colours, flavours and countrymen with hearts of gold. It’s an insight into the land marred with stereotypes by the media which makes it an engrossing read. The book is abundant with descriptions of the meals they have.

Listening: To Ali babbling, cooing and gurgling all day long. It trumps my favourite playlist on my iPhone anyday.

Thinking: That I have to finish this list on time!

Watching: Not much nowadays. My husband and I are serious movie buffs and right until the last few weeks of my pregnancy, we were watching at least two movies every weekend knowing very well that going to the theatres would no longer be an option for a very long time once the little one arrives. We now enjoy Last Man Standing, Modern Family and Veep on a very low volume (sometimes I have to rewind it multiple times to get the joke) in order not to wake Ali after he’s slept for the night.

Anticipating: Ali’s first Eid. Growing up, Eid was the celebration I loved with family, which always ended with an impromptu trip to the park or beach. He’s lucky to have both sets of grandparents in the country and I can’t wait to capture it all and share it with him when he grows up.

Eating: Very healthy meals nowadays and it surprises me why I wasn’t doing it sooner. I do go weak in the knees when I visit Cocoville in Jumeirah. Chocolate has supernatural powers to override my senses.

Feeling: That my little one is growing up way too fast for me to enjoy. I was transferring a few photos from my camera and cannot believe how much he has grown in these few months.

Wishing: There were a few more hours in the day for time to do a few things I can’t do right now.

Can you believe that Ramadan is almost here? We are blessed beyond measure to experience one more Ramadan, aren't we? Alhamdulillah.

I've been receiving messages about Ramadan Journal 2014 and I am happy to know that there are few out there who love the series. I am wondering whether we should continue with the same thing this year though. Why don’t we change things a bit? Let's do something that truly reflects the spirit of Ramadan.

Yes, we will still keep a journal but without a list of prompts AND achieve these small but big goals this year.

We will, In sha Allah:
1. Finish recitation of the Holy Quran with translation at least once;
2. Learn a short chapter (or few verses of a long chapter) from the Holy Quran;
3. Say Tahajjud prayers at least ten times;
4. Learn three new prayers (duas);
5. Read an Islamic book with our children;
6. Donate food or clothes with our children watching;
7. Help a random stranger;
8. Tell a non-Muslim friend about Ramadan;
9. Write down one thing we are grateful for, in our journal, every day.

The two weeks' challenge ofwalk/run went quite well. I missed two days in between but it has helped me ease back into running. One of the things I love about running is how it puts my eating habits to place. I know hitting the gym/running track actually gives us an excuse to eat a doughnut or binge on chocolate. It’s the same with me as well. But after few days of wayward eating (check mangocream pudding and spiced orange popovers), I slowly come back to healthier meals. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in occasional treats. The issue is the actual frequency of these occasional treats.

Listing the recipes I've shared here was also a major eye opener. I actually have more salad / soup recipes on my Instagram feed than on my blog. Why so? Food styling and photography. I struggle a lot when it comes to these two.

There are days when I just don’t care about the photo and then there are days when I want a good photograph no matter what. Today was such a day.

While idling away on Pinterest after watching a video on how to beat procrastination, I came across this beautifully written post on food photography and I loved how Bakers Royale explained the importance of composition. Absolutely inspiring!

Since I I had plans to cook and photograph brown lentil soup today – this is a staple in our house and I felt the need to share before Ramadan - I decided to practice right away. And so, while the soup was getting cooked, I tried styling and putting a background together with every thing I had read in mind.

I started scrounging my shelves and looking for things I hadn't used before. Since the soup was brownish, I felt the red in my saree would help.

A 'popover' interview that happened in my head. Yes, I'am weird that way.

How did you come across Popovers? Pinterest.

Why did you bake them when you have no idea what they are? I like anything with orange or cinnamon sugar.

What are they like? Airy puffs with a hollow shell. The literally POP in the oven.

How long does it take to bake them? They are very easy to bake. Simply blend the ingredients, pour the batter into muffin tin after waiting for a while. Bake. Roll in melted butter and spiced sugar if you like. Done.

How do you live a productive life? How do you find the time to do the things you want to do? How do you manage time constructively? Is there any such thing as work-life balance? Though I do not have clear cut answers to these questions asked by many, I do have some tips to share:

1. Wake up early
Waking up early not only has a religious importance in my life as a Muslim, it also gives me a lot of quite time before my children are up. I’ve noticed that whatever task I give myself to do can be finished easily in the early morning. I find it easier to write and easier to cook healthy breakfasts and lunchbox meals when I've had the time to go through my morning routine calmly. When I wake up late, I feel groggy and rushed. Do note that to wake up early, you have to sleep early as well.

2. Eat Healthy, Move More, Sleep well
The kind of food we eat affects our mood and energy. Going for a walk even if for 20 minutes daily can do wonders to your creative energy. A sleep deprived body can never work to it's full potential. (Easier said than done, ha?)

3. Make lists
No, I am not talking about mental lists. They don’t work. Write down your goals – short or long term. Get it off your head and dump them on a piece of paper.

4. Make a daily schedule
Recently when I felt overwhelmed with ideas and schedules running through my head, I sat down and made a daily schedule on MS Excel. I simply divided each day in two parts – one before Talha got home from school and one after. I gave time for everything I felt was important - meal preps, work (packing orders, admin work etc), social media, blogging, work outs etc. It worked, beautifully!

I’am not exaggerating when I say I felt like I got few extra hours! I found chunks of time at unexpected places and this helped me in finishing some important projects on time. Although I do not follow the schedule religiously any more, I've come into the habit of getting important work done in the morning and keeping evenings aside for family. In short, schedules make life hassle free.

5. Get rid of distractions – TV
When we moved to this apartment last year, we decided to not get any cable connection. I can’t tell you how much time this decision has saved my family and I. I could write a blog post only about it. Our evenings are much more wholesome now with evenings spent together as a family. We have a lot more conversations than we did before. If you cannot get rid of your TV completely, start by reducing screen time. Start small, with baby steps.

Thank you Neelu for giving me the opportunity to be a guest blogger on your blog. Your blog has always been fun and very inspirational to read so it is a real pleasure to have this opportunity to talk and share a bit about myself and my love for art and craft with your readers.

As way of an introduction; hello all, my name is Shruti. I am a new mom and an avid paper craft hoarder! I would have loved to call myself a paper craft-er but the fact of the matter is that these days I am more of a hoarder than a craft-er, thanks to my 'bundle of joy'. But I definitely have got to thank Pretty Paper Studio (Neelu) for letting me be a part of their design team which keeps my creative juices in check and help me keep in touch with the art.

It is time I got back to running. It is time I snapped myself out of my holiday 'mode'. Lately, I've been moody and irritated as Iam not working out regularly. So I'am setting myself a mini challenge after reading this post here on Runner's World.

Run or walk two kilometers a day, for two weeks, starting from June 1, 2014.

Have you tried cooking with your children? How does it go? No, let me rephrase it, how does it end? Messy and stressful? Same here. We start well, with very good intentions. By the time we finish though, there is flour everywhere, rolling pins are rolling on the flour, fruits and vegetables are ready to sue us for battery and I would be standing there making myself promise to not do this again. Ever.

Few meals later, we would attempt to cook together again. I worry about the mess and the cleaning up I have to do after. (They do help me with the cleaning, but the real cleaning is always left for me to do.) I remind myself that it can and will get messy, there will be a lot of cleaning up, but I’am teaching my children a very important skill.

From my few years in the kitchen, I’ve come to learn that cooking, contrary to popular belief, is an important life skill. Yes, life skill. It is the most under rated and over looked. And when it comes to Indian boys or men cooking? Let’s not go there.

So why am I so resolute about teaching my kids to cook? The answer is simple – the easiest way for my children, or anyone for that matter, to lead a healthy life is to learn to cook and prepare meals at home. I’ve experienced both sides of the coin – eating homemade meals and depending on daily take outs – and I firmly believe that healthy homemade meals are the way to go.

Have you heard of the quote that says 'we met for a reason, either you are a blessing or a lesson'? I've come to believe that whoever we meet, we meet them for a reason. When I met Salomie, never in my wildest dreams did I think we would remain friends for so long (over six years), and actually end up working together.

We did our Masters together and had met couple of times to share notes (she lived in Abu Dhabi at the time). I was so excited to personally meet a fellow student - we were studying online and giving our exams at British Council. And now? Salomie just joined the PPS Team as Social Media Assistant. Masha Allah!

Salomie's four year old daughter, who is one of the most thoughtful child you could meet, and her passion for baking keeps her busy. You should check out her blog to read more about Krissy and her incredible cookie making tutorials.

Let's find out what she is up to these days?

Working on – my new job ;D. Also on a couple of sweet decorating projects that will hopefully turn out well enough to blog about.

Listening to – Windows are Rolled Down by Amos Lee.

Have you started planning for Ramadan? I've been thinking about it every now and then. I'am also noticing that Ramadan related searches are leading people to my blog, which makes me happy and nervous at the same time.

I'am not sure whether I want to continue with daily Ramadan Journal blog posts this year. Although I enjoyed looking at Ramadan in a new way and connecting with fellow Muslims around the world the past two years (2013 and 2012), I must say that being on Social Media can be very time consuming, especially during a month like Ramadan when you want to devote most of your time in ibaadah and achieving your spiritual goals. I'am thinking about sticking with the daily photography prompts on Instagram, but switching to weekly blogging. Maybe I will change my mind later.

There are few things I would like to do before and during Ramadan. Firstly, I would  really like to start Ramadan with a clear state of mind. There are some knots that I need to loosen, some old grudges that I have to let go of. In sha Allah.

Secondly, I would love to memorize the 99 names of Allah. I had tried to finish memorizing them last year before Ramadan, but I lost steam after few days. I absolutely love this 99 Names of Allah Tree by Karima's Crafts and I'am planning to do it with Talha and Aisha. In sha Allah.

Hello, this is Ujjwal and I am so glad to be on Neelu’s blog today. I have known her virtually for quite some time and I love reading her blog. So I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to be here.

Decoupage is a hot trend these days and rightly so. I love the fact that this simple technique can turn anything beautiful in a matter of few hours and is so simple to do.

Being in India, I celebrate a lot of festivals and majority of them involve using terracotta pots during prayers. And because I didn’t had the heart to discard them after the festivals, I have been saving them.

Today, I will show you how to turn these simple pots into pieces of art without a lot of effort using decoupage.

We start by soaking the pots in water for a couple of hours. This step will make sure your pots are clean of any dust. Also, since the pots will be saturated with water, they will take up less paint and give a better finish.
